3-D Learning

Innovation Pilot

The 3-D Learning project explores innovative application of 3-D digital representations to support student learning. We are currentlycalling for areas of interestto explore potential projects in this area.

Background – What is ‘3-D Learning’?

‘3-D learning’ is an umbrella term under which we include a variety of different approaches to digital representation of 3-dimensional objects digitally, and the ways in which users view, interact with and manipulate them, either individually or collaboratively.

These approaches can include:

  • ‘Visualization Approaches’ – representation of 3-D objects on a 2-D surface
  • Augmented Reality (AR) – real-world environment augmented by input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data
  • Virtual Reality (VR) – simulated physical presence in a virtual environment
  • Mixed Reality (MR) – coexistence of elements of physical (real) and digital (simulated) environments, enabled by immersive technology

Some of these approaches are well-established and relatively straightforward (e.g., 3-D visualization in many different disciplines), but there is still the potential for application in novel pedagogical contexts. Others are more emerging and nascent and therefore represent an ideal space for exploration for us to learn more about how they may be used to support and enhance student learning.

Call for Questions / Areas of Exploration

We are pleased to issue acall for submissionsfor either individual or collaborative areas of exploration for 3-D learning, open to UBC faculty across both campuses.

  • Are you interested to learn more about the potential for 3-D learning approaches within your teaching / subject?
  • Do you need access to equipment, support, and like-minded peers to enable you to learn more about this area?
  • Do you have a specific project / research question / application area you would like to move forward?

We invite your input to help us to dig more deeply into the potential that these learning tools and approaches may have for the future of student learning.

Support offered for selected submissions

Successful applicants will receive support with the following aspects of their projects:

  • Identifying which approach(es) may be suitable / applicable within their disciplinary context
  • Identifying relevant equipment and (where possible!) obtaining access to it
  • Pilot testing relevant approaches / interventions
  • 在其他我识别相关的相关方法nstitutions / organizations
  • Participation in a faculty learning community around approaches to 3-D learning

Criteria for selecting proposals

Project will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Potential benefits to students
  • Potential impact beyond the initial project
  • Feasibility in terms of resource availability and complexity

FAQs

这些问题从演讲了. You canwatch the full videofor more details—the 3-D learning part starts around the half-hour mark.

Q: Is it feasible to integrate assignments that utilize Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality where there would be approximately 10 groups working on projects? I am thinking about equipment, support, software, etc.
A: At this time, we are focusing on exploration and experimentation, and we should be able to source the necessary equipment and support to do small pilots or trials. One of the outcomes of the pilots should be a feasibility study that looks at how a particular solution can be scaled up to be used in a large class and what are the cost implications.

Q: Will the Emerging Media Lab include capacity for housing and maintaining resources? We have some push-back from departmental IT regarding taking responsibility for ensuring resources are reliable enough for large classes on short timelines.
A: We need to discuss a long-term approach for storing and maintaining equipment and content, and we are planning to do this in parallel to the pilot projects. The Emerging Media Lab should be able to host equipment and content for the duration of the pilots and experimentation sessions.

Q: I have avirtual world, and you can access the virtual world through Google Cardboard with an Android phone. As I heard from the presentations, I think this might be a cheaper and easier access/creation compared to HoloLens. I would like to collaborate with other Faculties. I would like to propose collaborations with people who are interested in knowing more about it.
A: We will provide updates about the different projects in progress and will encourage collaboration and sharing.

Q: Can sessional instructors apply for this as a project PI?
A: At present, this call for questions is open to tenured or tenure-track faculty or 12-month lecturers from both UBC campuses.
